Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
